Internet is used by 56.1% of the total worlds population according to a survey conducted in 2019.
Approximately 3.2 billion people use the internet according to a survey conducted in 2015, which is significantly growing every day.

What is the Internet?
The word Internet is formed by two words 'Inter' and 'Network' which means the interconnection of networks.
A network is a group of computers linked together to exchange data and to perform complex operations simultaneously.
That simply means that when you're connected to the INTERNET you are actually exchanging data i.e. internet allows communication of devices without a need of a direct physical connection from the user end.
Using the Internet 99% of data is transmitted using wires and the remaining 1% uses a wireless mode of transmission.
How the Internet works?
The Internet is a very large computer network consisting of servers which are used to store data and wires which are used to transport the data.
The data is exchanged by using wires connected at the bottom of the ocean called the submarine communication cables.
These cables are mapped all over the world by different companies which are both government and private individuals, as a result, it is very clear that nobody owns the Internet.
The data is transmitted in small partitions called packets which contain the information and can be merged at the receivers end to retrieve the information.
History of Internet
The history of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of wide area networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, United Kingdom, and France. The U.S. Department of Defense awarded contracts as early as the 1960s, including for the development of the ARPANET project, directed by Robert Taylor and managed by Lawrence Roberts. The first message was sent over the ARPANET in 1969 from computer science Professor Leonard Kleinrock's laboratory at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Applications of Internet
Communication :
Internet serves as a wide array of communication methods which include the transfer of text, multimedia, audio, graphics, etc over large distances at very high speeds.
Information :
Internet serves as a wide source of information with almost unlimited content which is increasing every minute, in fact, the very line which you're reading right now is possible the only because if the internet.
